Success Stories Update!
I’m delighted to report that the last several weeks have seen a bunch of success stories. It’s made me realize that it’s crazy, but we’re well more than mid-point through the year, so perhaps it’s time to update everyone on some of the SPONY success stories of 2010.
I have to admit that I don’t always hear about the progress some songwriters have made through their contacts with either panelists and/or their colleagues. There are actually some shy ones out there! So, following is the list of successes that I am aware of (in alphabetical order), and if you’re reading this and I’ve missed you, please let me know.
(BTW, if you really don’t want me to announce it in a public way, have no fear, I won’t. But, I would love to know for my own personal gratification.)
Here we go:
Alicia Angel, who has licensed a number of tracks to WAC Music has had one of them selected by Berry Gordy to be covered by a protege of his for her debut album. And, there’s a second song of Alicia’s the artist is interested in recording.
Addie Brownlee is now working with independent producer Steve Messina.
Mike Bruce is a hair’s breadth away from signing a licensing agreement for several of his songs. If I was writing this a week or two from now I’d be able to tell you more, so stay tuned!
Hugh Colocott and Jimmy Santis, who work as a producing team under the name of Vortex Music, met Dani Tersini at SPONY, and the songs from that collaboration were signed to a publishing deal with Mission Music.
Johnny Elkins signed a licensing agreement with WAC Music for multiple tracks.
Dan Ferrari has had several additional placements with MTV (he already had 9!).
Susan Friend has signed a licensing agreement with WAC Music for multiple tracks.
Greg Lato has signed a licensing agreement with WAC Music for multiple tracks.
Annie Minogue has signed a licensing agreement with Ishlab Music for multiple tracks.
Tatiana Owens has licensed 3 songs to MTV/VH1.
Ra Domini has licensed 5 songs to MTV/VH1.
Gail Vareilles has signed a licensing agreement with WAC Music for multiple tracks.
The name of the game these days is finding the right placement source(s). Online music production libraries and searchable song data bases are key resources for music supervisors.
WAC Music is particularly wonderful due to Suzanne Hilleary, its founder and CEO. Not only is she a music industry veteran with ties to every single label and publisher, as well as the major Hollywood studios and production companies, but she’s a tigress when it comes to pitching and marketing the songs licensed to her group, and she’s a sweetheart to boot. I’ve been lucky to have her as a panelist twice – once at the live NY event, and also for my Film & TV music online panel.
Not only did Berry Gordy find Alicia Angel in her searchable data base of songs (see Success Story list above), but the night she joined us she thought that one of the songs she heard (written by Noel Cohen) would be perfect for Whitney Houston, who was working at that time on her last album. The very next day, Suzanne sent it directly to Clive Davis, who listened to it within a day or two.
I probably sound like Suzanne’s PR rep, but it’s just that I’m so delighted that WAC Music has turned into a phenomenal resource for the SPONY writers making this truly a win/win situation!
There are a lot of new searchable song data bases coming on the scene and I have been getting reps from a lot of them to come be on the panel. I’m putting good thoughts out there that they become as visible on the list of Success Stories!
More next time…
