Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow…

Who knew that we songwriters could claim the same motto as the post office!  With 18 inches of snow in some places we still had a packed-to-capacity crowd!  Writers came in from as far away as Chicago, Rhode Island and Washington, DC.  Amazing!  And a night of great talent too.  Congratulations to all the Keepers.  The panelists were all pleased with what they were able to take away in their Keeper bags and were excited about several in particular.  I’ll be putting good thoughts out there that we will be able to immediately add to the Success Story list.

We rarely get pitches without lyric sheets these days, but in another case of proving the importance of having them…our guest from VH1 handed me three lyric sheets at the end of the evening and asked me to reach out to the three writers.  He had originally passed but decided he would like an opportunity to hear more.   Those three writers now have another chance to impress.

Two of the panelists commented on something we’ve touched on in the past.  The intros to some songs are so long that they lose interest before the song even begins.  I know a lot of us don’t have home set-ups so it’s not easy to quickly burn a CD.  But it’s really a good idea, especially for this type of event where you only get 30-45 seconds of listen time, to burn a presentation copy which gets right to the good stuff.  Use that one to pitch, and then if it’s a Keeper I can trade out the presentation copy for the regular version.  It was interesting that two of the panelists brought that up at the end of the night.

Thanks to everyone who trooped out in such weather.  No one can say songwriters aren’t a committed bunch.  Of course “committed” is the operative word, isn’t it!!

Til next time…
