Notes on HBO Special Edition
Four wonderful HBO creative executives joined us from HBO! I was happy that one of them works for HBO Latino thereby giving our Latin writers a chance to pitch something. Their needs were pretty specific so not many songs were Keepers, but each of them made sure to tell me how many tracks they had to pass up only because they didn’t think they had a project with a good fit. I also thought it interesting that while listening they conferred with each other about some of the possible placements for what they were hearing. I usually try and pay attention as to whether there’s a trend or not to what the panelists take with them. I think the one unifying factor from the other night is that most of the music they kept was atmospheric and had something unusual and interesting about the track.
I’m always surprised when I hear from the panel that they were surprised by the level of talent in the room. From the beginning I wanted SPONY to be a forum for professional level songwriters to have an opportunity to pitch their material and to network with each other. And, I am thankful that for the most part that is exactly what we get. Each month someone tells me they are now part of a new songwriting team because of the contacts they make at SPONY events and nothing makes me happier!
Of course I’m still excited to hear about pitching success stories so CONGRATULATIONS TO POC SILVER AND STEEPLECHASE for licensing 10 cuts to MTV and signing deals with WAC Biz and Sir Groovy for a bunch more! Some of the songwriters are so shy and modest about announcing these things so even though the MTV and Sir Groovy deals were made a while ago, I just heard about it today. I don’t know. If it were me I’d be shouting it from the rooftop! But, to each his own.
Hope everyone is in a safe place from our impending storm, Hurricane Irene! Until next time…
