And now with our online events, you get panel discussions, song critiques, workshops (all coming soon!), and can get to know other members of the global songwriting community!

Notes from September’s Event…

An eclectic mix of music…We had an executive from Sony/ATV’s Urban Music A&R, an independent music supervisor looking specifically to place in a new hip-hop dance film, and the Film, TV and Advertising director for The Orchard who was mainly interested in finding tracks for advertising projects. It meant we got to cover a lot of ground, and indeed there was a nice number of Keepers. With our music supe looking to fill 27 different cues in the film, let’s just say her Keeper bag was quite full! I’m always delighted when it’s a win/win. That’s the whole idea. I am hoping to have a long list of placement announcements to make in the next month or two from this one.

It’s too bad it’s only the panel which is given a set of lyrics as they had a good laugh over a song entitled “Party in My Mouth.” The panel started talking about it from the moment I put the paper in front of them, and from what I heard of the song before it was stopped, well, let’s just say “graphic” would best describe them. In fact, when later I announced another song title with a suggestive tone, our Sony A&R exec looked at the other writer and asked if it was another one of hers! Moments of comic relief go a long way toward easing tension in the room.

I know that SPONY is not for the faint of heart. Despite the fact that everyone knows it’s all about what the panelists are looking for at this moment in time, it’s still difficult to not take it personally, and to not let it get you down if your song is passed on. I always try to reinforce that the same song can be a Keeper with all three panelists one month then with no one the next, but we’re all attached to our little “babies.”

And, speaking of babies, I’ve got music executives from Nickelodeon coming in October, so all of you who have children’s tracks, get ready! I’ll be announcing the full panel in the next week or so.
